Choosing the right products for your log home will "preserve your dream". Choosing the wrong products can cause you to spend hours preserving, staining, and sealing your log home, only to see the products you used fail. Some products are just not made for log homes or are not formulated to work together.

For instance, some preservatives can discolor wood, causing a lasting effect on the stain's appearance. Stains with waxes or other additives can interfere with caulk or chinking adhesion, leaving cracks and checks. Stains that are not elastic will crack and peel when logs unavoidably move (from surface expansion and contraction due to moisture and temperature changes). Using the wrong caulks, those not formulated to adhere well to logs or to absorb log movement, can lead to loss of adhesion, tears, and sealant failure.

Surface Preparation is the first and most critical step for proper application of finishing products.  Whether it is new construction or restoration, the log surfaces must be clean and, for best results , free of any previous coatings

CPR is used to clean and brighten uncoated wood that is dirt, faded or gray from UV exposure.  Mix CPR to the brightening solution strength for use on new construction just prior to staining to remove dirt and grime from the building process and to break down mill glaze.  Use CPR for periodic cleaning on stained logs to extend the life of your stain.
Once log or wood surfaces are clean, preserve them to protect against fungal decay and insect damage.  Borate-based products are effective and inexpensive.  IMPEL Rods, another form of borate, offer protection against internal decay of logs
Treat your logs from the start.  When sprayed or brushed on your home, PeneTreat, a borate-based wood preservative, forms a shell of protection to defend against rot, most wood-destroying insects and fungi.  PeneTreat is easy to use and EPA-registered.  It will not affect the color of the wood, interfere with stain or caulk adhesion, and is completely odorless.  Low cost and easy application make PeneTreat the popular choice.
IMPEL Rods offer a unique and effective preservation system for the prevention and control of internal decay in log and timber structures.  They are a highly concentrated, solid form of water-diffusible borate, IMPEL Rods are ideal for both prevention treatments of high risk area (hot spots) and remedial treatments in areas with existing decay.  They are an EPA-registered, low cost way to stop rot and decay--from the inside.

The best application guidelines are going to be those supplied by the stain manufacturer, after all, they developed the formulation.   Therefore, acquire application instructions from the stain manufactures and follow them.  If you are hiring the work done, make the application instructions available to your painter.  Remember these 5 rules for best application:  clean wood, sound wood, warm wood, dry wood, textured wood.  To avoid lap marks, it is always a good practice to work horizontally until you reach a natural break in the wall surface, i.e. log butt joints, windows, doors, etc.

INTERIOR FINISHING
It's music to your eyes.  When applied to bare or stained wood, Symphony enhances the natural grain of your logs by creating the illusion of depth.  The clear, no-yellowing formula allows the natural color of wood to shine through.  It's water-based, completely VOC compliant, has no offensive odor and can be easily applied by spray. (Symphony is available in 1 and 5 gallon containers.) Symphony, gloss or satin, is the beautiful way to protect the natural elegance of interior logs.

EXTERIOR / INTERIOR FINISHING
High Sierra Log Stain was formulated for ease of application without sacrificing beauty or performance.  It really is easy to apply.  The 2 coat system has a longer working time so that lap marks are practically eliminated and the second coat evens out inconsistencies that may have occurred on the application of the first coat.  It can even be applied at cooler temperatures, surface temperatures as low as 40 degrees F.   High Sierra has a color pallet of 10 choices, from rich, warm browns, to natural honey colors.  The high quality, trans-oxide pigments enhance the beauty of the grain while protecting the wood.  The finish is stunning, durable, and will look like it was applied by professionals.

 

EXTERIOR FINISHING

Your logs are now "primed" and ready for chinking and caulking.   There are 3 basic principles to follow when applying chinking or caulking.

1.  A clean surface already treated with a preservative and stain that is compatible with the chink and caulk.

2.  Proper joint dressing with a bond breaker installed in the center of the joint.

3.  Tooling the chinking or caulking to ensure good adhesion to the logs.
